Dr. Cottler is Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO and Director of the EPRG. Her NIH funding has been in the areas of methods in psychiatric epidemiologic research with emphasis on substance abuse and dependence (specifically MDMA and crack/cocaine) and its comorbidity with other disorders. Her studies include vulnerable populations such as African Americans, high risk women and injection drug usersShe has been involved in HIV prevention research since 1989.

Specifically, Dr. Cottler's contributions to the field include assessment of substance use and psychiatric disorders, the public health consequences of substance use, including HIV; and peer-delivered prevention models to reduce HIV and STD transmission, substance abuse and high risk behaviors.

Recently, Dr. Cottler served on a National Academy of Sciences panel to study the Social and Economic Impact of Pathological Gambling. Currently, she serves on a NAS panel to research data on Firearm Injuries.

In 1997, she received the Missouri Public Health Association's W. Scott Johnson Award for public health service and leadership in Missouri; in 1998, she received the Missouri Public Health Association Publication Award for work in HIV prevention. Dr. Cottler is Director of an NIMH Post-Doctoral Training Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Director of a NIDA Pre and Post-Doctoral Training Program in Comorbidity and Biostatistics, and a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Division. She is a charter member of NIDA-K IRG, and a member of NIDA's Editorial Board; she has published extensively in numerous journals. When not traveling around the world for work, she enjoys cooking, cleaning and doing the laundry.

Dr. Cottler's Research Interests:

  1. Drug and alcohol use, abuse and dependence in vulnerable populations—injection drug use, women, and African Americans
     

  2. Development of assessments for and classification of drug and alcohol use, abuse and dependence; other psychiatric disorders and risk factors
     

  3. Public health efforts to prevent alcohol and drug dependence, HIV risk behaviors and STDs
     

  4. Training program Director for Psychiatric Epidemiology, and Drug Abuse Comorbidity
     

  5. Multisite studies of MDMA and other party drugs
     

  6. International studies of above issues
