Cottler named President of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA) for the Centennial Year

March 2007 – Linda B. Cottler, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, was named President of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA) in 2010, its centennial year.

The APPA is one of the oldest research organizations in North America, and is focused on the scientific investigation of human behavioral disorders.  Each year, the APPA hosts an annual conference in Manhattan, New York for its 467 members to discuss a chosen topic relevant to psychopathology and substance use research.

Dr. Cottler has been a leader in the organization since being elected Treasurer in 1997.  As President Elect of the APPA, Dr. Cottler has the responsibility and honor of choosing the theme of the meeting. She will also have the privilege of celebrating 100 years of the APPA and will incorporate that theme into the meeting.  Dr. Cottler will be only the 10th female president in the organization’s 100 year history.

Past presidents of the APPA from Washington University’s Department of Psychiatry include Samuel B. Guze (1982), Lee N. Robins (1988), C. Robert Cloninger (1993), and Charles Zorumski (2003).  A number of other scientists who have been trained at Washington University have also been President.

Dr. Cottler is an epidemiologist whose studies include Ecstasy, cocaine, and prescription drug abuse.  Her work goes one step further and focuses on reducing the risk and improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations most frequently impacted by the consequences of these behaviors including HIV.

Dr. Cottler has been author or co-author on over 150 scientific papers and chapters.  She is a Charter Member on the NIDA-K Review Committee, serves on many other committees and holds memberships in academic societies. Dr. Cottler is on the editorial board of high-impact journals and is a reviewer of numerous publications. Dr. Cottler was also a past president of the Academic Women’s Network (AWN) (2005-2006) at Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cottler started work at Washington University as a Project Coordinator with Dr. Lee Robins, then joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry in 1988 after finishing her PhD in Sociology here at Washington University.
