Cottler named President of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA) for the Centennial
Year

– Linda B. Cottler, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry at
Washington University School of Medicine, was named President of the
American Psychopathological Association
(APPA) in 2010, its centennial
year.
The APPA is one of the oldest research organizations in North
America, and is focused on the scientific investigation of human
behavioral disorders. Each year, the APPA hosts an annual conference in
Manhattan, New York for its 467 members to discuss a chosen topic relevant to psychopathology
and substance use research.
Dr. Cottler has been a leader in
the organization since being elected Treasurer in 1997. As President
Elect of the APPA, Dr. Cottler has the responsibility and honor of
choosing the theme of the meeting. She will also have the privilege of
celebrating 100 years of the APPA and will incorporate that theme into the
meeting. Dr. Cottler will be only the 10th female president in
the organization’s 100 year history.
Past presidents of the APPA from
Washington University’s Department of Psychiatry include Samuel B. Guze
(1982), Lee N. Robins (1988), C. Robert Cloninger (1993), and Charles
Zorumski (2003). A number of other scientists who have been trained at
Washington University have also been President.
Dr. Cottler is an epidemiologist
whose studies include Ecstasy, cocaine, and prescription drug abuse. Her
work goes one step further and focuses on reducing the risk and improving
the quality of life for vulnerable populations most frequently impacted by
the consequences of these behaviors including HIV.
Dr. Cottler has been author or
co-author on over 150 scientific papers and chapters. She is a Charter
Member on the NIDA-K Review Committee, serves on many other committees and
holds memberships in academic societies. Dr. Cottler is on the editorial
board of high-impact journals and is a reviewer of numerous publications.
Dr. Cottler was also a past president of the Academic Women’s Network
(AWN) (2005-2006) at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Cottler started work at
Washington University as a Project Coordinator with Dr. Lee Robins, then
joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry in 1988 after finishing
her PhD in Sociology here at Washington University.
