HealthStreet
(Site at 4306 Manchester, opened January
2009)
In collaboration with the Center for Community-Based Research at
the Washington University
Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences, the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group has launched
HealthStreet.
HealthStreet is a transformative initiative aimed at changing the
way research is conducted and put into practice. HealthStreet works to
give all members of the community an opportunity to participate in
research, and to give each individual personal and careful attention in
the process. We work to make research more accessible to community
members, to increase public trust regarding research studies, and to
educate the community about the importance of participating in clinical
trials.
Community Health Workers (CHWs) work WITH the community daily to educate
individuals about research opportunities available at Washington
University and to enroll people who are interested in being linked to
clinical trials.
CHWs visit bus stops, beauty salons, social service agencies, parks, and
hundreds of other locations to meet St. Louis residents, to offer them the
opportunity to participate in research studies, and to let them know about
the services that HealthStreet has to offer.
The goals of HealthStreet are to:

-
Change
the way research is conducted and put into practice by making research
more accessible to underrepresented populations
-
Serve as
a community based site that links the population with social, mental health
and medical services
-
Understand the community’s perceptions about research
-
Change
investigators’ culture regarding diversity in research
