EPRG Faculty and Staff Mentor NIDA Summer Research
Scholars

Each summer, NIDA
offers the opportunity for undergraduate underrepresented minority
students to be introduced to drug abuse research by placing students with
distinguished drug abuse research scientists for 8 to 10 weeks during the
summer. During this time, the students can take classes, attend lab
meetings, collect data, prepare manuscripts and presentations, and conduct
library research. Since 2003, the Epidemiology and Prevention
Research Group (EPRG) has been hosting NIDA Summer Scholars from across
the country.
This summer, EPRG
mentored 3 outstanding scholars: Tumaria McDaniel from Spelman College,
Huiting Liu from Grinnell College, and Angel Glover from Prarie View A&M.
Each of the summer scholars worked on their own individual projects
researching different prescription drugs for the Prescription Drug Misuse,
Abuse, and Dependence grant. They also contributed to the
formation of the Risk Behavior Assessment, helped write a grant, worked
one-on-one with faculty and staff, and participated in the STOP project.
At the end of the program, the scholars presented their individual
projects to the EPRG with PowerPoint presentations.
The NIDA scholars
learned a lot from EPRG by working on research projects, but more
importantly, this experience was a catalyst for them to choose research as
a future career. These emerging scientists not only discovered new areas
of interest, but energized the EPRG to continue to offer this opportunity
to other enthusiastic students.
