Catina Callahan O'Leary, PhD

Catina Callahan O’Leary, PhD has been with the
Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group (EPRG) since 1999. Catina
graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1996, and attended the
George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University, where
she completed a Master of Social Work Degree in 1999. In 2007, she
completed a Ph.D. in Social Work at the George Warren Brown School of
Social Work; her dissertation, chaired by Drs. Tonya Edmond and Linda
Cottler, was titled The Association of Criminal Justice System
Involvement on Change in High-Risk Behaviors among Urban, Crack-Cocaine
Using Women.
Catina’s responsibilities with the EPRG focus on coordinating the group’s
U.S. and international HIV prevention studies. Specifically, she manages
Dr. Cottler's recently completed NIAAA-funded "Peer Intervention to Reduce
HIV in Heavy Drinking Females" study, the NIDA-funded "Prevention of STD’s
in Drug Using Women study, and the NIDA-funded “Deconstructing HIV
Interventions for Female Offenders” study, which aims to understand
salient factors associated with women’s participation in EPRG's prior HIV
prevention studies. The data from these studies has been collected; the
team is focused on finalizing several publications from these datasets.
Catina also manages a new HIV prevention study, the NINR-funded “Sisters
Teaching Options for Prevention” study, a two-arm intervention study
comparing standard resources offered through the St. Louis Female Drug
Court to a Peer-partnered Case Management intervention which aims to
reduce high-risk behaviors. She has also worked closely with Dr. Cottler
on two internationally based studies, the World AIDS Foundation-funded
“Community Based HIV Prevention among Females at Risk in Bangalore India,”
targeting female partners of heavy drinking males for an HIV prevention
intervention program, and in Taipei, Taiwan, the “Collaborative MDMA and
other Club Drugs Study,” which focuses on recruiting MDMA users from the
community in order to understand club drug and other substance use
disorders. Catina is also the Assistant to the Treasurer for the American
Psychopathological Association.
