Matthew Smith, PhD

Matthew J. Smith, Ph.D. is an NIMH post-doctoral fellow. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he received his Ph.D. is Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. While completing his dissertation, he volunteered at a local community support program where he provided mental health services to adults with severe mental illnesses living in the community.

Matthew is currently working with John Csernansky, M.D. on a project examining the differences in cognition and personality between siblings and their brothers and sisters with schizophrenia.

Dr. Smith will also pursue his interests in researching how the experience of having a brother or sister with a serious mental illness shapes the development of siblings across their life course.
