Deepthi Varma, Ph.D.



Deepthi Varma, Ph.D, joined EPRG as a Post-doctoral fellow on the Fogarty International Center Training Grant with Dr. Cottler in March 2007. Dr. Varma obtained a Master in Social Work and later earned her M.Phil and Ph.D from the Department of Psychiatric Social Work, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Science (NIMHANS), Bangalore, India. Dr. Varma has done extensive clinical work and research while in India. Her work was primarily in the area of mental health and sexual health related problems of women, street children and people living with HIV. For her doctoral work she conducted a qualitative enquiry into the sexual and reproductive health issues of men and women belonging to different income groups in the city of Bangalore, India.

Dr. Varma is currently working on a qualitative data set from the project on Deconstructing HIV Interventions for Female Drug Offenders. The objective of this analysis is to explore the client-level, environment and intervention process factors associated with intervention participation and compliance, as well as the attrition during the 4 and 12 month follow up among both female drug-using offenders and non-offenders.

During her Fogarty fellowship, she intends to pursue her special interest in the mixed method approach and acquire additional skills in conducting HIV prevention intervention research with hard to reach populations.
