Abstract

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, people around the world do not perceive harm from club drugs due to lack of information of their consequences. Thus, the worldwide community is unprepared to assess, treat and prevent club drug abuse and dependence. Using focus groups (Phase l), diagnostic assessment (Phase II), clinical validation (Phase III), and testing, imaging and biological markers (Phase IV), this study in Taiwan aims to mirror studies of specific types of drugs currently being conducted in the US and Sydney, with a few additions. Specifically we will:

1) Describe the nature and extent of self-reported dependence on and abuse of specific types of club drugs (Ecstasy, GHB, rohypnol, ketamine and methamphetamine);

2) Administer a modified Risk Behavior Assessment (RBA) to understand the risk factors related to club drug use, abuse and dependence for cross-cultural comparisons with the other sites;

3) Evaluate depression and other major co-occurring psychiatric disorders among users;

4) Conduct qualitative research on the unique contextual factors that relate to club drug and methamphetamine use in Taiwan to help interpret the data from the epidemiological study; and

5) Enroll respondents simultaneously into studies evaluating biological and neurobiological vulnerabilities using PET scans and blood chemistries.
