Abstract

Whereas many HIV prevention studies target female commercial sex workers, this study targets women on the other end of the transmission chain – women who are at risk by virtue of living with men who engage in high-risk substance use and sex behaviors, including sex with commercial sex workers. The aims are to: Adapt and pilot test a community-based intervention being used in the US for an HIV prevention study of women at high risk in India; Evaluate lifetime substance use, psychiatric, STI and health risk histories of women with heavy drinking partners; Develop a culturally relevant community-based HIV prevention intervention that centers on the Health Belief Model to increase women’s knowledge of HIV risk factors; Test the 3-month effectiveness of increasing women’s knowledge of risk; Test the feasibility of applying unique tracking and locating strategies to achieve follow-up rates never before achieved in community-based studies in India; and Foster the development of Indo-US collaborative efforts based on results of the pilot and disseminate feasibility findings. The advantage of this pilot is that it provides an opportunity to combine the skills of two teams that have made important contributions in their respective fields from Washington University School of Medicine and the hub of behavioral research in India, NIMHANS (the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience).
