Abstract
This national study of knowledge of
medications, use of medications and signals of diversion, misuse and
abuse, will take place in ten regions of the United States and will target
urban, suburban and rural areas that have been found to have the highest
rates of prescription stimulant use among those with ADD/ADHD diagnoses
according to parental reports. In lieu of a student-based population, we
propose to survey youth where they congregate, such as shopping malls,
entertainment venues, and food and drink establishments. Our innovative
recruitment and remuneration plan will capture a more representative
sample than plans that restrict themselves to school attendees. The
N-MAPS study will:
1) Evaluate
the ability of pre-teens and adolescents 10 to 18 years old to recognize
and identify prescription stimulants by name.
2) Detect
and evaluate past 12-month use (prevalence) and potential signals of
misuse, abuse and diversion of specific stimulants by name.
3) Evaluate
sources, patterns of, and reasons for stimulant use.
4) Identify
demographic (age, region, etc.) variation in use, misuse and recognition
patterns.
5) Monitor
trends over time.
6) Submit
tabulated data to Pinney Associates to assist with federal reporting
requirements.
