Dr. Grucza is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. He received his Ph.D. from the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in 2000. He then enrolled in the Post-Doctoral Training Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Washington University School of Medicine, and was awarded the M.P.E. degree in 2001. During his postdoctoral training, he studied associations between personality and mental health under the mentorship of Dr. C. Robert Cloninger.

After completing his postdoctoral training in 2003, Dr. Grucza joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry. He received a Career Award (K01) from NIDA under the mentorship of Dr. Cloninger and Dr. Cottler.

Dr. Grucza’s current research is focused on longitudinal studies in personality and substance abuse; he is conducting follow-up studies on a cohort of children in St. Louis and a cohort of adults in Hawaii. Additionally, he works with a variety of data sets, including the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism; the St. Louis Personality, Health and Lifestyle Survey; the Eugene-Springfield Personality study, and large public-access epidemiological data sets focused on substance abuse.

Dr. Gruzca's Research Interests:

1. Personality tests and measurements, associations between personality and mental health

2. Substance abuse risk factors in children

3. Longitudinal studies in personality and substance abuse

4. Association between personality and genetic/familial risk for substance use disorders
